Shangri La is a fictional place described in James Hilton’s 1933 novel Lost Horizon. He describes it as a mythical and magical utopia lost in the Kunlun Mountains, and it has become synonymous with an earthly paradise usually thought of as being in Tibet. However, we have our own little Shangri La right here on the island of Oahu. 1930s glamour girl Doris Duke built her extravagant, Islamic inspired abode right along the shore to house her extensive collection of Middle Eastern art.
