The precursor to the spring clothes pin was the one-piece wooden clothes peg, invented by Jérémie Victor Opdebec. The older designs did not use springs, put were fashioned out of a single wooden peg. In England, clothes peg making used to be a craft only associated with gypsies. The spring design, was invented in Vermont in 1853 by David Springfield.
