hottest wedding trends of 2018

Guest post by Kylie Carlson, International Academy of Wedding and Event Planning

The New Year is here and planning a wedding just got even more exciting! The release of the fourth annual International Wedding Trends Report complete with predictions from dozens of the world’s most recognized wedding professionals is causing waves of anticipation especially among couples just beginning to plan their 2018 nuptials. Here are some highlights to help you find the right direction for your upcoming wedding!

BEAUTY TRENDS

While some brides will still choose to wear their hair in loose, flowing curls, we’ll see more over-the-top up-dos with braids staying popular, indicates hair stylist Emma Louise. In makeup, trending social media hashtags like #iwokeuplikethis and #nofilter are inspiring brides to ask for a natural look, according to makeup artist Kristin Gasperas. Although the outcome may look natural, it can easily take as much time and talent to achieve it as it would something more dramatic.

THE FASHION SCENE

Dalia MacPhee predicts that some brides will ditch the traditional white or ivory gown, and that “nudes and pinks will be big this year.” She also sees the demand for detachable sleeves, full-length capes and non-traditional wedding dress lengths like mid-calf and knee-length growing. White and ivory jumpsuits in place of bridal dresses will also emerge in high demand in 2018.

For men, navy is the new black in tuxedoes, according to MacPhee, and many vests will be different colors than the tuxes with which they are paired. Bridesmaids will focus on selecting dresses that can be worn again.

PHOTOGRAPHY TRENDS

Photographer Carla Ten Eyck, says that we will see fewer props and more focus on the interaction between the couple in the world of photography. Also, more couples are ordering albums and prints, effectively “rescuing their images from the computer,” notes Ten Eyck happily.

In a potentially unforeseen twist, photographer Mike Busada anticipates a dramatic increase in, of all things, pets in weddings! In fact, over 40 percent of his clients for 2018 have requested that their pets play a role in their weddings. Busada gives his consent, but always warns clients not to attach the real rings to an animal playing ring bearer. Should your pet suddenly decide to leave, you may never get your valuables back!

FLORAL DESIGN

Leafy Couture’s Sarah Richardson anticipates that couples will want “bigger floral displays to create dramatic entrances to churches and ceremonies, and glamorous floral column backdrops as a photo opportunity.” Bright, bold colors as well as organic greenery with white accents will both be strong palettes in the new year.

The overall focus for the new year remains the guest experience, according to our experts. Plan to incorporate interactive food stations, live roaming performers, slo-motion photo booths and showtenders (bartenders trained in showmanship) into your wedding plans to offer the most engaging experiences possible. Do all of this in a non-standard venue like an abandoned warehouse or aging castle for the perfect nostalgic feel and you will be fully embracing the hottest trends of 2018!
