a floral celebration

Laura and Matt wanted their guests to enjoy their wedding as much as they knew they would. It all started with the reception venue, Brazos Hall. It was the perfect blank canvas that they knew they could turn into the space they were looking for. The couples initial plan was to go minimalist on with décor and flowers, but that all changed with a little bit of research online and guidance from their wedding coordinator.

What they ended up with was an incredible display of flowers and romantic lighting hanging above the dinner tables capturing the wow factor both Laura and Matt wanted. For this couple, their wedding was a dream come true from beginning to end, but one moment that stood out above the rest was the private dinner they had on the dance floor before all of their guests entered!

From the bride, Laura – “Matt and I met at St. Edward’s University when he was a sophomore and I was a junior. We would always see each other at the gym since he played basketball and I played volleyball. Sparks didn’t fly until one very eventful Halloween night (I am so happy my friends forced me to go the party that night because I would’ve rather stayed home watching TV!).

As I walked into the party I saw the cutest ninja turtle out of the corner of my eye. I had a small water bottle in my hand and as I was standing behind Matt, I squirted him with my water to get his attention. Yes, he was dressed as a ninja turtle, and I was a black eyed pea. Who knew that those two ridiculous costumes make the best combination! We talked for a large chunk of the night and when he said he had to go, I was definitely bummed. About 10 minutes after Matt left, a text popped up on my phone from him. We still can’t agree on how Matt got my phone number…but that’s besides the point. I really didn’t want to go to the party that night, but everyday I thank God that I did because now I get to marry that kind-hearted, loving and genuine ninja turtle.”

From the groom, Matt – “It is true, Laura and I met at a Halloween Party in 2011. Out of no where, a girl in a ridiculous costume squirted me with a water bottle. To be honest, I had no clue what she was even trying to pull off with that costume. What is a black eyed pea anyway? Nonetheless, to answer the mystery from Laura’s story above, I had her number because she gave it to me! So, a few hours after I left (not 10 minutes), I texted her. Little did I know, that text would lead me to my wife to be.

Within the next few months we started dating. Laura was a junior and I was a sophomore, which naturally made me cooler. Volleyball games, basketball games, late nights in the Woodward computer lab, Sunday mass at the university’s chapel, and not to mention the times down on 6th street certainly highlight those early years while we both attended SEU.

However, with college comes summer break. And after our first year of dating, the inevitable had arrived. I would go back to New York, while Laura would stay in Texas. So, one early May afternoon, she dropped me off at Houston Hobby Airport and drove away in her car; however, not before wiping a down-pour of tears from her face. We were faced with three months of long distance dating. Instead, later that week, Laura booked a ticket to Albany International and came to visit my family and friends in Clifton Park. It was at this point I knew Laura was the one for me.”

From Laura – “Matt told me that he was going recruiting in Dallas for the weekend and since he recruits a lot I thought nothing of it. Jamie, my sister who lives in Houston, asked if I was free for a girls’ weekend. I said of course because those are the best and she came in town. We got our nails done, went shopping, and went to all our favorite restaurants. She told me while we were shopping that one of her friends is having a small get together at a winery close to Austin and asked if I wanted to go. It sounded fun to me so I said yes.

As we get closer I recognize the sign next to the winery and it was of a restaurant that Matt had taken me on multiple dates to and a restaurant I loved! I told Jamie this, and I STILL had no clue. I asked Jamie why we were passing up all the parking spaces and she was silent. All of a sudden we turn into this small area that said ‘Private Event.’ I thought her friend had rented out some sort of space there. As we turn the corner, I see Matt, tons of rose petals leading up to where he is standing, and beautiful flower arrangements around him. It was literally like the Bachelor!

I obviously start crying right away, somehow pull myself together, and walk up the rose-covered aisle to meet my guy! He said some sweet things, got down on one knee, and asked me to be his wife. I start jumping up and down and am a crying mess when out of the corner of my eye I see people! Matt’s parents, my parents, my siblings and their spouses were all there and started cheering. As if I wasn’t crying enough this part really did me in. We had dinner at the amazing restaurant that I love and had a very special night celebrating with family.”

From Laura – “For our color and style, we started off very simple. We wanted light colors including a lot of neutrals. Now, we had the GREATEST wedding planner in the history of wedding planners, Clearly Classy Events, and she really helped our vision come true. She always supported our crazy ideas and helped us come up with unique and crazy ideas herself.

David Kurio was our florist and his work is unbelievable. He worked through our vision with us and made our space look exactly how we wanted it to. He made floral arrangements and hanging masterpieces that I didn’t think were possible. He went above and beyond and was so fun to work with.

The most important thing for the two of us it to do it together. We wanted to make sure everything we did was a joint decision. We definitely had SO much fun helping to create an image for the hanging flower arrangements! Also, making sure everyone loved the food was a big one for us! But most of all, we didn’t want to just focus on wedding planning. We really invested time into our premarital counseling and retreat. We wanted to be fully invested in those classes so that we could carry that over into our marriage.”

Laura – “My dress was a Monique Lhuillier. I wore Jimmy Choo sparkly heels for the ceremony. For the reception I changed into some amazing sparkly rainbow Christian Louboutin high tops. My sister wore a pair of Louboutin sneakers for her reception, and I couldn’t resist following in her footsteps.

For jewelry, I went with what I wear daily because those pieces are so important to me. My family loves jewelry that has pearls. They mean a lot to the girls in my family so I thought it was fitting that that’s what I stuck with for the wedding. I wore David Yurman pearl earrings and a bracelet that match my mom, sister, and sister-in-law. I wore a necklace that Matt had given me for Valentine’s Day the year before that match my earrings and bracelet perfectly.

For the cakes, Matt really loves ALL New York sports teams so his cake had a layer for each team. He had a NY Knicks layer, a Yankee layer, a NY Giants layer, and the top was a St Edward’s University layer. We met at St. Ed’s so that one obviously went on top!

My cake was very elegant with multiple layers and flowers on it and both were absolutely delicious.”

Laura – “One of my favorite parts of the day besides marrying Matt of course was my first look with my dad. That was a very special moment to me and one I will never forget. That day was full of so many moments but this special moment stays crystal clear in my memories.

Another favorite moment of mine is the private dinner Matt and I had that was set up on the dance floor. WOW, it was a whirlwind day but for that short time we got to talk, soak in, and have a moment alone. We got to look around the venue just the two of us and really take it all in. I’ll be forever grateful to Jenny DeMarco for doing an amazing job of capturing every beautiful moment of that day but this one of course stands out in my mind. She always made us feel so comfortable while being photographed and that came from her calming and one of a kind personality!”
