magnolias and matrimony

From wedding planner Asheville Event Co. – “Marjorie dreamt of her wedding day filled with love, laughter and having their sweet pup, Scout by her side. It all came true when she married Matt, on a gorgeous June afternoon in the lush mountains of Highlands, NC. Old Edwards Inn was set for a wedding of elegance and tradition, the men in their crisp white dinner jackets, the tables set with fresh magnolia blooms, gold accents and candlelight, it was all so beautiful. They danced the night away, having the time of their lives!

From the bride, Majorie – “Matt and I met while we were both undergraduates at Harvard College. Matt was a month away from graduating before moving to San Francisco to work for JP Morgan and I was a junior about to travel to Kenya for two months for thesis research. We met while we were out with friends on a fateful Wednesday night and quickly decided that we wanted to make our relationship work despite the distance and having known each other for such an abbreviated amount of time.”

“Matt’s proposal was perfect and full of personal touches. I was raised on a farm outside of Greensboro, NC, which has a beautiful wooded area with a trail and pond. While I was with my mother and sister at a friend’s bridal shower, Matt, my father, and my brother-in-law, Mike, spread rose petals and nailed blown up versions of Matt’s favorite photos of us on trees along the trail.

I came home to strict instructions that I needed to go find Matt and Mike by the pond and proceeded along the trail. I walked through the rose petals and canvas photos to Matt, who was waiting by the pond in a suit. After immediately accepting his proposal, my family, Matt, and I met Matt’s family, who had flown down for the occasion, for dinner and to stay for the evening at a local hotel.”

“Matt and I came up with a vision for our wedding very quickly and very organically. I wanted to showcase the best of the South and highlight my Southern upbringing, while Matt wanted a formal, fairly traditional wedding. Magnolias have always been my favorite flowers and we have several magnolia trees on my family’s property, so they became a centerpiece of the wedding vision. They perfectly encapsulated the beauty of the South, but also easily translated into elegance, and we used its colors–green and white–in almost every aspect of the day.

Our location, in an outdoor, mountain setting, certainly showcased North Carolina, while the attire and a seated, plated dinner gratified Matt’s desire for formality. A final must for us was including our dog, Scout, who served as my ‘bridesdog!’”

“Funnily enough, the attire was one of the earliest decisions we made in the wedding planning process. Matt and I thought white dinner jackets with a tuxedo would fit perfectly with our vision. I wanted to do a traditional, elegant wedding dress, but one that still had a bit of my style. I went wedding dress shopping in San Francisco with five of my closest girlfriends in the area and a few bottles of champagne. I fell in love with a capped sleeve Lela Rose dress (‘The Spring’) and had no difficulty deciding that was my dress.

However, several months after buying it, I had this realization that when I pictured myself in my wedding dress, it always had long sleeves. Jin Wang, the studio where I purchased the dress, was incredibly accommodating and, along with Lela Rose, created custom lace sleeves that matched the lacing on the bodice of the dress.

For my bridesmaids, I gave them a choice of about ten, floor-length black dresses and then purchased different pairs of drop emerald earrings for them to wear. With my sister, Eva, who was my maid of honor, we decided to pull a ‘Pippa Middleton’ and have her wear a white dress.”

“I think it was my now-mother-in-law who told me that if you have good food, good drinks, and good music, your guests will have a wonderful evening. Thus, we wanted to make sure those elements were covered. Beyond that, it was very important to me to have an organized wedding planner, who shared my vision (Cortney at Asheville Event Co. was AMAZING), a florist who could bring my vision to life (Eatherley at Floressence Flowers was AMAZING), and a photographer who could capture it all (Katherine Miles Jones was AMAZING).

Probably the most important thing to us, however, was paying homage to our family and celebrating them. We are both extremely close to our families and wanted to include them and enjoy as much time with them as possible.”

“It’s so hard to choose, which is a testament to the incredible work our families and wedding-planning village undertook. It was so meaningful to me when I walked down the aisle with my father, but Matt and I just loved the reception and dancing with our family and friends.

One of my favorite moments, though, actually arose out of a memory lapse. Despite careful planning, I forgot to get something borrowed before the wedding day. As a surprise, my grandmother loaned me the gorgeous ring that my late grandfather gave her for their 50th wedding anniversary. Our photographer captured the entire exchange and it remains such a beautiful memory.”
